Am 7. Oktober 2006 wurde die russische Journalistin und Menschenrechtsaktivistin Anna Politkowskaja vor ihrer Moskauer Wohnung erschossen. Der Mord ist bis heute ungeklärt.
Masha Novikovas Film ist sowohl eine Hommage an Anna Politkowskaja und ihre Arbeit, als auch eine Zustandsbeschreibung der schwierigen Situation, in der sich kritische, unabhängige Journalisten im Russland des 21. Jahrhunderts befinden.
Die Regisseurin zeichnet die letzten sieben Lebensjahre von Anna Politkowskaja nach, der Zeitraum, der ihre Tätigkeit für die Nowaja Gaseta umfasst – eine Zeitung, die sich durch ihre Berichterstattung über Korruption, organisierte Kriminalität, deren Verbindung zu russischen Amtsträgern sowie ihr Engagement für die Einhaltung der Menschenrechte und eine friedliche Lösung des Tschetschenienkonflikts hervorhebt. Masha Novikova trifft ehemalige Kollegen Politkowskajas, die ebenfalls bedroht und angegriffen wurden und vom ungeklärten gewaltsamen Tod mehrerer Mitarbeiter der Nowaja Gaseta erzählen. Und sie begibt sich an die Schauplätze, von denen Politkowskaja berichtete und zu helfen und vermitteln versuchte: nach Beslan, Nordossetien, wo im September 2004 Terroristen in einer Schule 1.200 Geiseln nahmen, zum Dubrowka-Theater in Moskau, wo im Oktober 2002 ein Terrorkommando 800 Theaterbesucher in ihre Gewalt brachte. In Tschetschenien begegnet sie einer Vielzahl von Menschen, die von den Gräueln der russischen Armee berichten: Plünderungen, Folter und das Verschleppen und Töten von mehrheitlich jungen Männern sind dort an der Tagesordnung.
Neben Angehörigen von Opfern und Weggefährten Politkowskajas kommt aber vor allem Anna Politkowskaja selbst zu Wort. Die Interviews und Filmdokumente mit ihr sowie die voice-over verlesenen Zeitungsartikel Politkowskajas machen deutlich, wie aktuell die von ihr vorgetragene Kritik ist.
On 7th October 2006, the Russian journalist and human rights activist Anna Politkovskaya was shot in front of her Moscow flat. Her murder remains unsolved today. Masha Novikova's film pays homage to Anna Politkovskaya and to her work. It also offers a detailed insight into the difficult situation in which critical and independent journalists find themselves in early 21st century Russia. In the film, the director traces the last seven years of Anna Politkovskaya's life – this period corresponds to the journalist's time as a correspondent for Novaya Gazeta, a daily newspaper that has distinguished itself with its reporting about corruption and organised crime in Russia, as well as with its commitment to human rights and its campaign for a peaceful solution to the Chechen conflict. Politkovskaya’s former colleagues, who have also been threatened and attacked, tell Novikova about the unsolved violent deaths of several other Novaya Gazeta journalists. In her film, the director also visits the places that Politkovskaya reported on: for example Beslan in North Ossetia, where in September 2004 1,200 children were taken hostage in a school and a house of culture in Moscow's Dubrovka district, where armed gunmen terrorised over 800 audience members in October 2002. In Chechnya, Novikova meets several people who tell her about atrocities committed by the Russian army. Plunders, torture and kidnapping and the killing of young men are part and parcel of daily life. Anna Politkovskaya is the film’s main protagonist, however. Interviews and film archives with her as well as articles she wrote that are read as voiceovers highlight how much her criticism remains pertinent today.

Masha Novikova was born in 1956 in Moscow, USSR. She studied pedagogy at the University of Moscow. In Kazakhstan, she worked as an assistant director at a German theatre. Shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall she moved to the Netherlands. She has since lived and worked in Amsterdam. She started work as an executive producer for Dutch television. At the same time, she studied camera, script writing and direction with Stefan Mayakowski at the 'Kunstweb'. In 2000, she started to make films herself. In the past, perspektive has presented films on which Masha Novikova collaborated, such as In Memoriam Alexander Litvinenko.

Masha Novikova wurde 1956 in Moskau, UdSSR, geboren. Sie studierte Pädagogik an der University of Moscow. Kurz vor dem Fall der Berliner Mauer kam sie in die Niederlande, seitdem lebt und arbeitet sie in Amsterdam. Während sie für das niederländische Fernsehen als ausführende Produzentin arbeitete, studierte sie an der Kunstweb unter Stefan Mayakowski Kamera, Drehbuch und Regie.
