Firaaq
Eine Mittelklasse-Hausfrau verschliesst ihre Türe vor einem Opfer und kämpft mit ihren Schuldgefühlen. Die Loyalität einer engen Freundschaft wird in einer Zeit, die von Angst und Misstrauen geprägt ist, auf eine harte Probe gestellt. Eine Gruppe junger Männer, die Opfer von Gewalt waren, sinnen auf Rache, um ihre Hilflosigkeit und Wut zu bekämpfen. Ein modernes Hindu-Muslim Paar ist hin- und her gerissen zwischen dem Instinkt, ihre Identität zu verstecken und dem Wunsch, sie herauszustreichen. Ein Knabe sucht verzweifelt nach seinem vermissten Vater, nachdem er während der Unruhen den Rest der Familie verloren hat. Ein heiliger Musiker klammert sich trotz all der Gewalt in der Stadt an seinen Idealismus, bis ein Zwischenfall seinen Glauben in Frage stellt.
Firaaq bedeutet auf Urdu sowohl Trennung, als auch Suche. Die Geschichte spielt sich innerhalb 24 Stunden ab, einen Monat nach dem Massaker, das 2002 in Gujarat stattfand. Firaaq ist eine erfundene Geschichte, basierend auf Tausenden von wahren Geschichten. Sie geht den emotionalen Spuren gewöhnlicher Menschen nach – einige waren Opfer, andere Täter und wieder andere schweigende Zuschauer. Der Ensemble-Film folgt verschiedenen Erzählsträngen, die sich mal überschneiden, mal eigenständig entwickeln. Verbunden sind sie durch den räumlichen und emotionalen Kontext. Durch die Protagonisten der Geschichten wird der Einfluss von Gewalt auf die innere und äussere Lebenswelt sichtbar. Gewalt verschont niemanden. Doch inmitten all dieses Wahnsinns erwacht in einigen doch wieder die Hoffnung auf bessere Zeiten.
A middle class housewife closes the door on a victim and struggles to overcome her guilt. The loyalties of two best friends are tested in times of fear and suspicion. A group of young men who have suffered violence seek revenge to fight their helplessness and anger. A modern day Hindu-Muslim couple struggle between the instinct to hide their identity and the desire to assert it. A boy desperately searches for his missing father, having lost the rest of his family in the riots. A saintly musician clings on to his idealism, despite all the violence in the city, until an incident shakes his faith.
The story is set over a 24-hour period, one month after a carnage that took place in Gujarat, India in 2002. Firaaq is a work of fiction, based on a thousand true stories. It traces the emotional journeys of ordinary people - some who were victims, some perpetrators and some who chose to watch silently. It is an ensemble film that follows multiple narratives that are at times interconnected and at times discrete. What unites them is their spatial and emotional context. Through these characters we experience the consequences of violence that impact their inner and outer lives. Violence spares nobody. Yet in the midst of all this madness, some find it in their hearts to sing hopeful songs for better times.
Nandita Das did her Masters in Social Work and since then has continued to work on Human Rights issues. She was in the main jury at the Cannes Film Festival in 2005 and Karlovy Vary in 2007. Firaaq is Nandita’s directorial debut.

Nandita Das
Nandita Das hat ihren Master in Sozialarbeit gemacht und seitdem weiterhin an Menschenrechtsthemen gearbeitet. Sie war 2005 in der Jury beim Film Festival in Cannes und 2007 beim Filmfestival Karlovy Vary.
